A word from Nick Percat: Sydney Telstra 500 Preview
29 November 2012
I’ll admit, there was a time earlier this year when I thought I was out of contention for the 2012 Dunlop Series championship.
Turns out I’m not.
My two race wins and round win at Winton Raceway (and some less than ideal results of my rivals) means I head to this weekend’s final round in Sydney still in with a shot. Good news there!
I’m now second in the series, just 32 points off the championship lead, and there’s a maximum of 300 points on offer.
Sydney is one of my favourite tracks. I’ve got nothing to lose, so I’ll bring my usual aggressive driving style. I can’t control what happens around me, so my aim is to win both races and we’ll just see where the cars fall.
Two 17-lap races will determine this year’s Champion, and there is no more fitting place to battle it out than on the streets of Sydney Olympic Park.
It’s one of the toughest street circuits on the calendar, and is very unforgiving. There will be no room for error, so you have to be on top of your game each and every lap.
Homebush is a normal road during the week, so if it rains it becomes very slippery with the painted lines and oil on the surface.
Every year there’s been a shower in either the main game or Dunlop races. Last year we had to change to wet tyres on the grid and then it dried up half way through the race, so that’s the kind of curve ball you can get there.
The Coates Hire Racing team gave me a great car at Winton, and I’m confident the #222 Commodore will roll out of the truck and be on the pace straight away.
Last year we were quite fast there and were leading until the wets gave up on us and we had to settle for second. Hopefully we can snare two wins and that way we’ve put our best effort into winning the championship and its up to the other guys to beat us.
There’s going to be a lot of intense racing but if I get two wins, it would be a great way to end the year.
