Percat Endures Highs & Lows at Bathurst Porsche Round
14 October 2013
Coates Hire Racing’s Nick Percat was left to rue what could have been after dominating qualifying and winning the first of three races in the penultimate round of the Porsche Carrera Cup at Bathurst.
Percat stunned the field in the single 20-minute qualifying session posting the fastest ever Porsche Cup qualifying lap of the Mt Panorama track with a time of 2m.08.772sec. This would have also put him 13th on the grid for Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1,000.
“That’s the most fun I have ever had” said a delighted Percat. “When I came through the Chase and saw my split time, I just started laughing to myself. It’s a credit to Porsche and my BRM Team and I couldn’t be happier”.
Percat’s dominance continued in race one, a 10 lap affair that saw Nick get a good start into the lead and drive away from the field, eventually winning by two seconds from Warren Luff, with reigning champion Craig Baird third.
In the second of the three races Percat and Luff raced side-by-side up Mountain straight on lap one with Percat tucking in behind Luff going into Griffin’s bend. Over the following laps Luff pulled out a small gap, as Baird got closer to the rear of the Coates Hire car. With his tyres rapidly deteriorating, Percat ran wide exiting the Chase on lap six allowing Baird to sneak through to second, which is the order they finished.
Percat started race three from third on the grid behind Warren Luff, who took his maiden Porsche win yesterday and championship leader Craig Baird. Into turn one Michael Patrizi turned into the side of Percat with Nick dropping back to twelfth. Percat dug deep to salvage as many points as possible from the race and worked his way back to eighth by the end. Craig Baird led Warren Luff across the finish line with Steven Richards in third.
Despite finishing the round third a very frustrated Percat said after the race, “It was all over before turn one with Patrizi turning into me when I was alongside. It has bent the steering, which meant I had huge understeer for the race. It was very disappointing”.
