Percat sets new lap record at Homebush
3 December 2012
Coates Hire Racing’s Nick Percat set a new lap record at the Homebush street circuit on his way from 18th to 5th in the final Dunlop series race of the year.
Series leader Scott McLaughlin led off the line with Scott Pye glued to his rear bumper. At the end of the back straight Pye passed McLaughlin for the lead and then Chaz Mostert passed McLaughlin going into turn one on lap two.
The top three points scorers were once again at the head of the field and fighting for the title with Percat setting one of the fastest laps of the race, on his way up the field.
By lap seven Percat was had worked his way up to eighth and by lap 11, he was challenging Andrew Jones for fifth.
Pye and Mostert continued their battle up front with McLaughlin content in third place. On lap 13 Percat had passed Jones for fifth and set out after Dale Wood who was running fourth.
On the penultimate lap Mostert tried everything to pass but Pye resisted enormous pressure to win, with Mostert second and McLaughlin third across the line to win the 2012 Dunlop Series title.
Percat put in a sensational drive through the field to finish fifth, and set a new Dunlop Series lap record along the way. Nick Percat: “It was a tough race for me in the Coates Hire Racing Commodore, as the clutch failed on the start line and I had to pump it to get moving.
“Once I got going I was fine, but I couldn’t use the clutch at all and had to be careful to match the revs and gearchanges into the corners to avoid brake lock ups. That was a bit more challenging than what it should be but to break the old lap record a few times throughout the race and then set a new lap record on the final lap was very satisfying.
“To pass that many cars and not put a mark on the car shows I am fast and can pass, unlike a few of the other guys in our series at the moment. Now we have a break and re-charge for next year”.
