Unique Support all adds up for Abacus in Perth
26 September 2013
When Abacus Services of Perth needed to support the construction of an underground basement carpark on their project in North Perth, they called Coates Hire's experts in design for a unique shoring support system. The shoring support system was used to prop the concrete walls of the basement, until such time as the floor slabs are cast and fixed into the walls.
The initial option to support the basement walls was designed as tie back anchors but, due to a combination of cost restraints, an alternative method was proposed which included Coates Hire's unique proprietary hydraulic support and propping system "Mega Brace". Mega Brace utilises perimeter waling system along with high strength 150 ton capacity hydraulic props to support the walls from within the confines of the site boundary, with no impact to neighbours and their concerns.
The plan footprint of the site was 35.19m x 21.54m with a maximum excavation depth of 5.55m to form a single level basement carpark beneath the apartment block and commercial premises that will eventually occupy the site at Albert Street.
The concrete perimeter retaining walls were cast in place by Compile Ryobi and consisted of a 6m high soil mix high strength wall that would need supporting in the short term until such time as the concrete floor slab at ground level has been cast, then the shoring can be removed.
The Coates Hire team at Kwinana branch supervised by Craig Bowman, supplied the equipment in a very short time scale and all branch staff worked tirelessly to achieve strict deadlines whilst at the same time learning about a totally new product and concept to the WA region.
Installation of the equipment was overseen by members of the Coates Hire Technical Team and was ably supported by Jason Brennan from Adelaide who provided invaluable on site knowledge having recently successfully installed the shoring at the Queensbury pumping station contract. This type of experience and support is invaluable to achieve success in this area so that the WA knowledge base grows and more projects come on stream as the capabilities of the product are understood and more opportunities are identified.
The product was installed in a little over 1 day, and the client was extremely impressed with the ease of installation and timescales taken to achieve a fully supported excavation, enabling them to advance the construction ahead of timescales and within target budgets. This project clearly demonstrates the capabilities of both the product and the support provided by the Shoring Technical Team based at Ingleburn NSW, to provide a unique package in the basement propping arena.
Armed with this knowledge and support, the Product Sales Team headed up by Brad Parker, are actively chasing further opportunities and would welcome any opportunity that exists to further supply this product in WA.
