Temora Council utilising machine control
15 August 2012
When Temora Shire Council was under-taking a couple of road improvements recently, they decided to try out a 3D machine control equipped motor grader from Coates Hire.
Due to the complexity of the road design for the reconstruction of approximately 900m of the Burley Griffin Way, which included vertical curves and varying cross slopes, the Council thought the new 3D technology would greatly assist the council in building the road to design.
After consulting with the Coates Hire Machine Control Product Specialist John Annison, it was decided that UTS (universal tracking system) technology was the best option for this job. UTS machine control gets its positioning data by means of a robotic total station that tracks a survey prism mounted to a mast attached to the blade of the machine. UTS is ideal for small road construction projects where a GPS base station has not been setup or where final trim accuracy (sub 10mm) is required.
Coates Hire has a large fleet of CAT 140M motor graders and 20-35 tonne excavators equipped with 3D machine control, and the demand for the productivity enhancing technology is growing.
As well as providing the machines and technology, Coates Hire can also organise data preparation (checking the job’s design files and converting them into a 3D compatible format) and also operator training.
After successfully completing the Burley Griffin Way reconstruction (the project was completed on time and was built to design, in spite of many job specific challenges including numerous traffic switches that interrupted the mixing and shaping process) the Council decided to keep the grader and technology and use it on another job. This job comprised of building a right hand turn lane on Goldfields Way, to allow better access into Temora Airport. With the skills and knowledge learnt from the previous job, the Council soon had the technology setup and cutting to grade, and they also used the robotic total station for setting out the job prior to using it for machine control.
3D machine control, whether it be GPS or UTS guided, has been proven to increase machine productivity and accuracy. Coates Hire is proud to be able to offer this exciting technology as it offers real benefits for our customers, and also provides a turnkey solution.
