The Coates Hire business started in 1885 as a small engineering company based in Melbourne, operating as John Coates & Co Ltd. The “hire” business had its origins in the development of the vibratory roller, which occurred just after WW2. The roller was so innovative that to attract customers Coates introduced a “try before you buy” policy which led to the formation of a hire company. This policy immediately proved popular and management quickly recognised the value of this new business model. Coates Hire was born when the company was publicly listed in 1955 and hire operations began, predominantly in the heavy construction equipment market.
In 1972 ANI acquired Coates Hire making it Australia’s largest hire company. Coates Hire was refloated in August 1996, and in early 2002 acquired Wreckair (from Brambles Ltd).
In 1993 Coates Hire Indonesia commenced operations in response to the ever increasing demands for construction and mining services throughout the archipelago
In 1999 Coates Offshore commenced business operations; the company has been transformed as one of the largest offshore providers of compressed Air & Steam generators in the world.
In January 2008, Coates Hire was delisted from the ASX when it was acquired by private investors, namely National Hire Group Limited and the Carlyle Group. The hire businesses of National & Coates Hire were merged to consolidate the 2 largest hire companies in Australia.
Today Coates Hire is the market leader in the Australian hire equipment industry and is the 5th largest Hire Equipment company globally.
