NICK PERCAT SYDNEY 500 PREVIEW
25 Nov 2016
We’re set for a huge finale to the 2016 season at the Coates Hire Sydney 500, in more ways than one!
It will be my 50th Supercars championship round start and also my last one driving for Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport, before I move to Brad Jones Racing in 2017.
I hope I can get a good result for the team and finish off that relationship on a positive note. Importantly for the crew, I want to bring the car back nice and straight… they don’t need any more work ahead of the Christmas holidays!
My two years with team have been character building, with plenty of ups and downs. Overall I’m proud to have claimed a Clipsal 500 win and a Bathurst 1000 podium with LDM, and a huge thank you to all the crew that have worked on the #222 Commodore to make those results happen.
It’s a big event for my personal sponsor Coates Hire who are the naming rights partner. I have a lot more ‘off track’ activities in my schedule, but I really enjoy mingling with the crowd and the fans. After eight years of Supercar racing at the Sydney Olympic Park circuit, I hope plenty of fans turn out for a big farewell.
The Sydney event has a well-earned reputation as a car breaker. There’s no run-off around the circuit and the kerbs are really aggressive. The key is to drive hard and fast while also being careful not to disrupt the car too much. Broken suspension components and gearbox issues are the two most common mechanical problems around this street track.
I’ve had an interesting run at the Sydney Olympic Park circuit. I won a Dunlop Series race there, and filled in for James Courtney at HRT in 2013 after his Phillip Island accident. Last year I didn’t compete there because I was still recovering from a blood infection.
Even despite that crazy wet weather in 2014 I’ve managed to register a finish in every Supercars race I’ve started there.
Here’s hoping I can keep that record intact as we close another chapter in Supercars history.
