NICK PERCAT GOLD COAST 600 PREVIEW
18 Oct 2016
Wow it’s certainly a whirlwind time of year. Straight from the Bathurst 1000 podium to the streets of Surfers Paradise! Our third place finish in the Great Race was a huge boost for the team. Add to that our ninth place finish at the Sandown 500 and the #222 crew have a fair bit of confidence on their side.
Cam and I are currently third in the Pirtek Enduro Cup points which is pretty cool. I hope we can finish off the Gold Coast 600 event strongly and stay in top five in the Pirtek Cup points. That would be an awesome result for a small team like Lucas’.
The Gold Coast 600 is one of my personal favourite events of the calendar. Hard to believe I made my debut at the circuit way back in 2006 in an Aussie Racing Car. I won the race from the back of the grid, and that caught the attention of the Walkinshaw Racing boss at the time.
I also raced Formula Ford there in 2009, and won the Porsche Carrera Cup round in 2013, so a podium in a Supercar would make a nice addition to the trophy cabinet!
There’s no doubt we’ve had our ups and downs so far this season, but I’m confident Cam and I can attack this final enduro event successfully. I’ve finished every Supercar race I’ve started at Surfers, and I’d like to keep that statistic intact!
The race track is very demanding on us drivers, I think it’s probably one of the hardest rounds, physically, that we do after the Clipsal 500. We normally face hot temperatures in the cabin, and with the long races around such an intense race track there is no real opportunity to rest.
I had a good weekend at the Gold Coast 600 last year. Oliver Gavin and I came close to winning it except we had a mechanical issue with the car that caused it to use too much fuel. A late splash and dash left us in sixth position.
Cam traditionally goes well at this street circuit. The last time he raced there (in 2010) with Garth Tander for HRT they won the race on Saturday. I’ve told him that I want him to produce the goods again and help us bring home a surfboard!
We’re back to a soft tyre round which will make it interesting. I think the track has been resurfaced in some areas so the track grip should be up in places, and I reckon we will see lap records tumble.
