NICK PERCAT SANDOWN PREVIEW
16 Sep 2016
The Supercar ‘season of endurance’ kicks off this weekend with the Wilson Security Sandown 500, and it will be my fifth start in the traditional pre- Bathurst 1000 enduro.
The Sandown circuit is only 20 minutes from home, so it's very easy for the Melbourne drivers. Importantly for me, it means I still get to hang with Douglas and take him for a walk each morning before heading to the track!
Our team tested this Tuesday at Winton, and it was easily the best test day I have had with Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport. The cars ran well all day and showed encouraging pace.
Importantly, it was a chance for my enduro co-driver Cam Mcconville to get his first real taste of the #222 Commodore. He managed to get 60 laps behind the wheel, and said he felt comfortable in the car. It’s pretty funny to think that when he made his Sandown 500 debut in 1993, I was only five years old!
Sandown is always a great race, and usually as unpredictable as the Melbourne weather. Even though it’s 500 kilometres it's essentially treated like a sprint race… from lap one we are driving the cars as hard as possible.
The co-driver’s role here is quite important. They have their own qualifying race on the Saturday which helps determine the grid for the 500km on Sunday.
I'm excited for the LDM crew leading into this weekend. Our car was very fast here last year and if the test is anything to go by, we could be in for a good weekend!
I’m also loving our special livery for this ‘retro round’. The design is based on a sprint car that our sponsor Phil Munday supported in the 70s.
