Splendour 2015 debugged
6 August 2015
The Splendour in the Grass festival’s increased capacity to 30,000 made getting it right in 2015 critical to its future.
Coates Hire provided a complete solution, covering site facilities, continuous power supply, the highest safety standards and environmental protection, that sets the stage for the three-year contract.
As the clincher, the Coates Hire deal came at a competitive price through the organisation’s ability to bundle multiple products and services through its volume-based discount structure. The company’s continuous acquisition policy guarantees the equipment is up to date and regulation compliant across multiple parameters.
As part of the package Coates Hire maintained a continuous project management presence at the site over three weeks and specialist trades during the three-day event, ensuring seamless bump-in and a rapid seven-day removal time.
In the current financial climate Splendour in the Grass faces the Catch 22 challenge of attracting enough numbers to pay for a line-up that ensures ticket sales. With recent shrinkage of revenue from entertainment as punters reduce discretionary spending, operating a tight budget is essential to the festival’s survival.
Coates Hire utilised its branch network and fleet size to access the 320-plus pieces of equipment required. It also assembled a team of specialists, working in shifts, to cover the different areas of demand. The volume of demand enabled Coates Hire to offer bundling of services and discounts, as well as establishing the foundation for a stable partnership, going forward.
Safety culture in the outdoor music event context lags behind construction industry standards and the festival organisers had a huge task ensuring safety remainded a priority. This is a major focus for the organisers and critical to awarding the contract.
Coates Hire invited the Splendour in the Grass team to demonstrate its ISO-certified safety standards in action, including the appropriate use of protective gear and regulation practices, as part of its tender pitch. Coates Hire prides itself on its passionate safety focus and absolute consistency in observing the correct protocols in every situation.
The festival has moved three times since 2001 and is now three years into a five-year trial with the New South Wales Government at its current location in North Byron Parklands. Management issues range from ecological preservation to noise levels. In 2010 the Splendour in the Grass waste management infrastructure won the festival a commendation from the international Greener Festival Awards, setting the standard for the level of environmental consciousness expected of the event.
An established environmental focus and commitment to observing regulatory standards across different industry sectors give Coates Hire a strong platform for ensuring adherence to the North Byron Parklands Fauna and Flora Management Plan for managing the potential impacts of large-scale events. The Coates Hire Splendour in the Grass team is also thoroughly conversant with the requisite processes and procedures for dealing with environmental contingencies.
Splendour in the Grass generates significant benefit for the Northern Rivers and Byron Shire, making the effective and economically viable logistics management of the festival crucial to the future wellbeing of the local community.
