It’s time for our annual trek west, but this year there’s one major difference. We’re racing under lights at Barbagallo Raceway for the very first time in Supercars. We’ll compete in a 120 km race on Friday, and a longer 200km race on Saturday as part of the Perth Supernight event.
I’m excited to race again under lights. Last year’s night race at Sydney Motorsport Park was good fun, and a big learning experience, and I feel all teams and drivers will be better prepared for the racing conditions under lights this time around.
I have a little bit more experience in the darker conditions having started the Ferrari in the Bathurst 12 hour earlier this year. There were no lights at Bathurst when the race started, so it was pretty tricky managing those conditions, but really cool to be in the racecar as the sun came up.
The spectacle of a night race will be really cool for the viewers both at the track and watching on tv, with the cars under lights, and the brakes and exhausts glowing. Many of the teams will add details on that are designed to add some “extra” under lights.
Speaking of, it’s quite cool for me to have Holden on the car again as part of the Holden Guaranteed Value livery. It’s a design that reminds of the Bathurst winning car, and the Holden brand is quite close to my family, so it’s special to have that on the doors.
I can’t wait to race on the newly resurfaced circuit. I did a flying trip over there a couple of weeks ago and did about 100 laps in a different spec racecar, but the information was still quite valuable in terms of where they’ve laid the bitumen and if they’ve changed any of the kerbing.
I think the biggest difference, apart from the racing under lights, will be to see how little, if any, tyre degradation there will be. Traditionally we’ve seen a huge amount of tyre degradation at Barbagallo Raceway, so the strategies we’ve run in the past may not necessarily apply anymore.
I head to Perth 7th in the championship points, and with a 100% finishing record in a Supercar there- so I’d like to keep both of these intact by the end of Saturday night!
